Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) – Harvard Workshop and Symposium on Spatiotemporal Innovation

The eResearch Knowledge Centre (eRKC) of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in South Africa, hosted a workshop and symposium on Spatiotemporal Innovation in Pretoria from 6-8 February 2024, in collaboration with Harvard University’s Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA). The workshop took place on 6-7 February, followed by the symposium on 8 February, in the HSRC office at 134 Pretorius Street, Pretoria, South Africa.

The workshop was attended by delegates from the HSRC and focused on spatiotemporal innovation research using the KNIME platform, covering various themes including:

  • Workflow-based tools for replicable data analysis: KNIME Analytics Platform, KNIME Server and KNIME WebPortal
  • Open data access, integration, online data sharing and visualization
  • Spatiotemporal analysis with geospatial analytics for KNIME
  • Artificial Intelligence analysis for spatiotemporal data
  • Workflow-based remote sensing analysis
  • Spatiotemporal analysis with social media data
  • Spatiotemporal analysis with healthcare data

The workshop provided an exceptional opportunity for participants to learn how to harness the tools and capabilities of KNIME to effectively process, analyze, and visualize spatiotemporal data, as well as to cultivate their domain knowledge and leadership skills.

Focusing on recent advancements in projects related to spatiotemporal innovation, the symposium featured presentations by members from the HSRC, Harvard CGA and some leading scholars on GeoAI from other universities with more than 40 onsite and online participants. Discussions also revolved around the latest developments in GeoAI and its application prospects in South Africa. The symposium offered an excellent opportunity for participants from both sides to explore potential avenues for future collaboration and in-depth research.
