Congratulations on the 2024 KNIME Teaching Grant Awarded to Prof. Minxuan Lan

Congratulations on the 2024 KNIME Teaching Grant received by Prof. Minxuan Lan !

Prof. Minxuan Lan is an assistant professor of the University of Toledo and the director of the Spatial Social Science Research Lab, an affiliate lab sponsored by the Spatial Data Lab project. He currently also serves as a mentor to the Spatial Data Lab Intern project:  AI and Crime ML Model.

It is expected that this teaching grant will lead to some key deliverables:

  1. Slide Shows: Six customized slide shows will be created to introduce KNIME for students, with a particular emphasis on spatial social science. The real-world workflows will be develped to demonstrate how KNIME effectively addresses social challenges and fosters knowledge sharing across these interconnected disciplines.
  2. KNIME Workflows: Two workflows will be derived from Pro. Lan's publications to help students gain proficiency in KNIME. Each student will then create an additional workflow based on a real-world application, resulting in approximately 20 new workflows per class. All workflows will be shareable within the KNIME academic community.
  3. Publications, Presentations, and Posters: Students in this course will develop research projects, which will typically evolve into formal journal manuscripts, presentations, or posters in the subsequent semester. The invaluable support and insights gained from KNIME will be emphasized in these academic outputs.
  4. A Spatial Social Science Repository: A repository will be established for the deliverables mentioned above at KNIME or the University of Toledo Digital Repository, ensuring that these slide shows, workflows, and related documents are systematically stored and organized.
  5. A new Spatial Social Science curriculum: A new Spatial Social Science curriculum with an aim at fostering spatial thinking in understanding human society, while highlighting the unparalleled facilitation provided by KNIME in this expansive interdisciplinary field.
